The tragic fate of magical girls is a literal countdown to monstrosity
In short: In the world of Magia Record, being a hero comes with a biological expiration date. Every wish granted by the creature Kyubey transforms a girl into a warrior, but it also links her soul gem directly to her life force. Eventually, every magical girl is fated to become a Witch.
The narrative of Magia Record expands on the 2011 anime 'Puella Magi Madoka Magica' by exploring the systemic mechanics of these transformations. In Kamihama City, rumors manifest as 'uwasa'—creatures resembling witches that possess their own labyrinths. The central conflict involves a group called the Magius, who seek to save magical girls from their inevitable fate. They developed a 'doppel system' designed to circumvent the transformation into a Witch, though it was originally restricted to Kamihama City.
The game’s first arc centers on Iroha Tamaki, who searches for her missing sister, Ui. The story reveals that Ui and a powerful entity known as Eve are one and the same. To combat these threats, Iroha forms a team including Yachiyo Nanami, Tsuruno Yui, Felicia Mitsuki, and Sana Futaba. The Magius eventually attempts to brainwash several members of this group to expand their doppel system globally, leading to a massive confrontation involving the legendary witch Walpurgisnacht.
Beyond local conflicts, the game explores historical magical girls across different eras. Players encounter figures from the Sengoku period, Cleopatra's era at the Battle of Actium, Viking warriors in Norway during the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and even victims of the Mongol invasions in Tibet. This expansion highlights that the cycle of wishes and transformations is a recurring phenomenon throughout human history.
The franchise has seen significant multi-media growth since its 2017 debut. It inspired a manga serialized in Manga Time Kirara Forward (starting August 2018), a stage play featuring the idol group Keyakizaka46, and an anime series by Shaft that spanned three seasons between 2020 and 2022.
