The cosmic price of a wish is your very soul
In short: In this dark fantasy universe, becoming a magical girl isn't a dream—it is a biological and spiritual extraction. To grant a single wish, girls must surrender their souls to alien entities, turning their bodies into mere hardware for a cycle of despair that threatens the heat death of the universe.
The mechanics of this world are governed by 'Incubators,' an emotionless alien species. They offer human teenage girls a contract: in exchange for any wish imaginable, the girl becomes a magical girl. However, the cost is immediate and profound. The Incubators extract the girl's soul from her body to create a Soul Gem, which serves as the source of her magic. This leaves the physical body as mere 'hardware,' designed to endure the hardships of battle while the girl must hunt witches—monsters born from human despair caused by accidents, disease, or suicide.
The system is designed for energy harvesting. To prevent the cosmos from reaching its final heat death, Incubators gather the vast quantities of power generated during a girl's metamorphosis into a witch. This cycle creates a tragic progression: as a magical girl succumbs to despair, her Soul Gem becomes tainted and eventually explodes into a Grief Seed. At this point, she transforms into a witch. The 'magical girl' form is essentially a juvenile stage of the witch, a biological countdown toward total destruction.
The narrative explores the paradoxes of selflessness through characters like Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi. Homura, who possesses time-manipulation abilities, spent numerous timelines attempting to prevent Madoka from making a contract. Ultimately, Madoka's wish to save all magical girls from despair created a 'Law of Cycles.' This established a new reality where girls are purified into a higher plane instead of becoming witches, but at the cost of erasing Madoka's human existence from everyone's memory except Homura's.
