How a British sitcom navigated the sudden loss of its legendary comedic father figure
In short: When Greg Davies created the sitcom Man Down, he cast comedy icon Rik Mayall as his father. After Mayall passed away in 2014, the show faced an existential crisis. Davies had to decide whether to continue the series, ultimately choosing to evolve the narrative while honoring the show's chaotic, midlife-crisis spirit.
Man Down, which aired on Channel 4 from 2013 to 2017, centers on the life of Dan Davies, a forty-something teacher suffering through a profound midlife crisis. Dan works as the head of drama at Sandalwood School, a job he despises, and spends his time navigating failed relationships and hanging out with his younger friends, Jo and Brian. The show’s premise is rooted in the mundane frustrations of adulthood, filmed primarily in the Hertfordshire locations of Watford and South Oxhey.
The production faced a significant turning point in June 2014 following the death of Rik Mayall, who played Dan’s father. Mayall had been slated for a much larger role in the second series, forcing Davies to meet with Channel 4 executives to determine if the show could proceed. The series ultimately continued, adapting its cast and dynamics over four series and two Christmas specials. Following Mayall's departure, the show introduced new characters, such as Nesta, played by Stephanie Cole, and eventually brought in Tony Robinson to play a character known as Daedalus, or 'Daddy', in the final two series.
The narrative arc of the show evolved alongside these changes. While the first series focused on Dan’s failed attempts to win back his long-term girlfriend, Naomi, the later episodes shifted toward his pursuit of Emma, a deputy headmistress. By the fourth series, the show reached a conclusion of sorts when Dan and Emma had a son together, despite not being a couple. In 2017, Channel 4 decided not to renew the sitcom for a fifth series, marking the end of Dan Davies’s televised midlife journey.
The show’s influence extended beyond the United Kingdom, premiering in Australia on SBS One in early 2015. Despite the challenges of maintaining momentum after the loss of a key cast member, the series managed to secure a fourth series of six episodes, which was officially confirmed in November 2016. It remains a notable example of how a comedy series can pivot in the face of real-world tragedy while maintaining its core premise.
