How a plane crash in Munich transformed a footballing dynasty
In short: In 1958, Manchester United’s ascent to European glory was violently interrupted by a tragedy in Munich. From the wreckage of a fatal crash to becoming the first English club to conquer Europe, the club's international history is a saga of resilience, heartbreak, and unprecedented achievement.
The club's European journey began in 1956, driven by the forward-thinking manager Matt Busby. While English Football League chairman Alan Hardaker initially blocked Chelsea from participating to protect the domestic game, Busby secured entry for United with the support of FA chairman Stanley Rous. Their debut season featured a staggering 10–0 victory over Anderlecht, a record that remains the club's largest win in any competition.
However, the momentum of the 'Busby Babes' was shattered in February 1958. A chartered flight, attempting to return from Belgrade, crashed in Munich after an engine fault prevented take-off. The disaster claimed 21 lives, including eight United players such as Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor. The tragedy left the squad threadbare, and while they reached the semi-finals against Milan that year, the club's competitive landscape was forever altered.
Despite the devastation, United rebuilt to reach the pinnacle of continental football. In 1968, they became the first English side to win the European Cup, defeating Benfica 4–1 at Wembley. This era of dominance continued through the late 20th century, most notably in 1999, when stoppage-time goals against Bayern Munich secured their second European Cup.
The club's international legacy is marked by both triumph and periods of exile. Following the Heysel Stadium disaster, English clubs were banned from European competition until 1990. Yet, United emerged from this era to win the Cup Winners' Cup in 1991 and secure multiple Champions League titles, cementing their status as a global footballing powerhouse.
