The Swedish club that reached a European final and broke the rules
In short: Malmö FF isn't just a football club; it is a record-breaking institution of Swedish sport. From being banned for paying players in secret to becoming the only Nordic side to reach a European Cup final, their history is a masterclass in persistence, professionalization, and local rivalry.
Founded on February 24, 1910, by 19 members of BK Idrott, Malmö FF (MFF) emerged from a municipal initiative to organize youth football. The club spent its infancy in local and regional divisions, even competing against Danish sides. It wasn't until 1931 that they secured a permanent place in the Allsvenskan, the top flight of Swedish football. However, their early rise was marred by a scandal in 1934: the club was relegated as a penalty for breaking amateur regulations by paying players small sums—a common practice at the time that MFF was uniquely honest enough to record in their accounts.
The club's trajectory changed forever under chairman Eric Persson, who took the helm in 1937. Persson is credited with turning the club professional, leading them from a titleless state to winning ten championships by 1974. This era of growth culminated in the 1970s, the most successful decade in the club's history. Under the management of Englishman Bob Houghton, MFF adopted new tactics that propelled them to five championships in the 1970s and a historic 1978–79 European Cup run, where they became the only Nordic side to reach the final, ultimately losing 1–0 to Nottingham Forest.
Today, Malmö FF holds the national records for most Swedish championships (24) and Svenska Cupen titles (16). They are the leaders of the overall Allsvenskan table maratontabellen, meaning they have won the most matches in the league's history. While they faced a difficult period in the 1990s—ending in relegation in 1999—the emergence of a young Zlatan Ibrahimović helped spark a return to the top flight. By 2010, the club celebrated its centenary by winning its 19th Allsvenskan title with a squad primarily composed of young talent, cementing its status as a powerhouse of Swedish football.
