In short: It was designed to be a world-class destination for motorsport, but the Mandalika International Street Circuit has faced a turbulent debut. From land disputes and human rights criticisms to track surfaces that literally crumbled under pressure, the story of this Lombok circuit is far more complex than the racing suggests.

The Mandalika International Street Circuit in Lombok was envisioned as a centerpiece for the Mandalika resort area, a 120-hectare project intended to drive tourism to West Nusa Tenggara. While the circuit's design was finalized in 2017 by Mark Hughes, its construction was marked by significant financial and social friction. The project involved an investment of 6.5 trillion Rupiah from Vinci Grand Construction Projects, with further infrastructure funding sourced from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank loans. However, the development has been shadowed by intense land disputes. Local residents and the United Nations Human Rights Council raised concerns regarding the dispossession of Sasak people's lands and livelihoods, leading to legal battles and even physical blockades of construction equipment in 2019.

The track's technical debut was equally fraught. Although inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in November 2021, early races were plagued by a deteriorating surface. Riders like Jorge Martin and Aleix Espargaro reported issues with sharp gravel and a dirty track, with some reports suggesting the asphalt aggregate was too fine for specifications. This led to an emergency repaving process in early 2022. The circuit's physical layout also underwent several iterations, shifting from a rumored 4.8 km length to its current 4.301 km configuration with 17 corners, a change implemented by the Mandalika Grand Prix Association to enhance safety and overtaking opportunities.

Despite these challenges, the circuit has achieved significant milestones, such as obtaining an FIM 'A' grade in 2022. The facility is unique in its 'street circuit' concept, designed so that parts of the track can accommodate normal traffic for resort access when no races are scheduled. While the pit building can serve as a conference center, the circuit remains a focal point for international competition, hosting events like the Superbike World Championship and the MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix.
