In short: Born Pedro Antonio Marín Marín, the man known as Tirofijo spent decades leading the FARC-EP. From his origins in a coffee-growing region to the formation of independent armed enclaves, his life defined a violent era. Despite a massive bounty on his head, he remained elusive until his final days.

Born in 1930 in the Quindío Department, Pedro Antonio Marín Marín emerged from a peasant family caught in the political crossfire of Colombia's mid-century conflicts. Initially aligned with the Liberal Party, his trajectory shifted during the period of intense civil strife known as La Violencia, which began after the 1948 assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. During this time, he adopted the name Manuel Marulanda to honor a slain union leader and aligned himself with the Communist Party of Colombia.

Marulanda earned the nickname Tirofijo, or Sureshot, for his reputed marksmanship. Following the 1953 coup by General Gustavo Rojas, most Liberal fighters accepted amnesty, but Marulanda and his comrades remained suspicious of the government. By the late 1950s, the state viewed these armed rural enclaves as dangerous independent republics. This tension culminated in May 1964 with Operation Marquetalia, a military offensive designed to dismantle his stronghold. While the operation scattered his forces, the survivors regrouped, eventually forming the FARC in 1966.

For decades, Marulanda remained the primary leader of the FARC-EP, working closely with political cadre Jacobo Arenas. His influence was such that by 2006, the United States government placed a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. Despite this pressure and multiple military attempts to target him, he was never apprehended. He passed away from cardiac failure in March 2008, a fact later confirmed by both Colombian officials and his own organization.
