How a former guerrilla fighter became the first leftist president of Colombia
In short: Gustavo Petro, a former member of a Marxist insurgent group, rose from a salt-mining town to the highest office in Colombia. His presidency marked a historic shift in the nation's political landscape, challenging traditional economic reliance on fossil fuels while navigating a complex legacy of past militancy and institutional reform.
Born in 1960 in Ciénaga de Oro, Gustavo Petro grew up in Zipaquirá, where witnessing local poverty and engaging with labor organizers shaped his early ideological development. At seventeen, while studying economics, he joined the 19th of April Movement, an insurgent organization formed in response to claims that the 1970 national election had been fraudulent. During his time with the group, Petro operated under the alias Aureliano, a nod to a character in the literature of Gabriel García Márquez. His involvement included stockpiling weapons, leading to his 1985 arrest for possessing explosives and firearms.
Following his release in 1987, Petro transitioned toward peaceful political engagement. He played a role in negotiations that led the group to demobilize in 1990 and transform into a legal political party. His subsequent career saw him serve in the House of Representatives and the Senate, where he gained prominence as a vocal critic of President Álvaro Uribe, frequently alleging ties between state officials and right-wing paramilitary groups. This reputation for opposition helped build the popular support that eventually propelled his 2022 presidential victory.
As president, Petro sought to redefine national priorities by moving away from the traditional economic dependence on coal and oil. He argued that the binary of left and right was outdated, proposing instead a politics centered on environmental defense and the transition toward tourism and knowledge-based industries. His tenure was marked by both ambitious social programs, such as subsidized water and transport for the disadvantaged, and administrative friction, including a temporary removal from his previous post as mayor of Bogotá. Ultimately, his career reflects a broader evolution in Colombian governance, where former combatants have moved from the periphery of conflict to the center of executive power.
