From Guerrilla Commander to Political Leader: The Complex Path of Timoleón Jiménez
In short: Born into a peasant family, Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri rose to lead the FARC, Colombia's largest rebel group. Known as Timoleón Jiménez, he oversaw years of brutal conflict before becoming a central figure in the peace process, transitioning from armed struggle to the complexities of legal presidential politics and public office.
Born in 1959 in Calarcá, Colombia, Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri joined the FARC-EP at age 17, driven by an admiration for the Cuban Revolution. Contrary to long-standing rumors, he did not study medicine in Cuba or the Soviet Union, nor did he receive military training in Yugoslavia. Instead, he gained medical training within the guerrilla ranks. By 2011, following the death of Alfonso Cano, Echeverri assumed command of the FARC-EP, adopting an alias inspired by Soviet Marshal Semyon Timoshenko.
Echeverri's tenure as leader was marked by severe controversy. The United States Department of State accused him of directing the FARC-EP's cocaine production and distribution, leading to a $5 million reward for his arrest. Furthermore, his leadership period from 2011 to 2016 saw the continuation of widespread human rights abuses, including the kidnapping of over 20,000 individuals, child recruitment, and forced displacement. Despite this, he became a pivotal architect of the 2016 peace deal, playing a critical role in preventing the collapse of negotiations with the Colombian government.
Following the demobilization, Echeverri transitioned to mainstream politics, founding the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force party in 2017. His political career was frequently interrupted by significant health crises, including a 2015 heart attack, a 2017 cerebral embolism, and acute coronary syndrome in 2018. These health challenges ultimately forced him to withdraw his 2018 presidential bid. Today, he continues to serve as the president of the political successor party, Commons, representing a stark evolution from his origins as a guerrilla commander in the Middle Magdalena Bloc.
