In short: In 2003, Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed in the center circle of a stadium in Lyon. Despite visible fatigue, he had insisted on continuing his match. His sudden death from a hereditary heart condition shocked the global football community, leaving a legacy of retired jerseys and a permanent place in sporting history.

Marc-Vivien Foé was a versatile defensive midfielder whose career spanned the top flights of French and English football. After beginning his journey with Union de Garoua and Canon Yaoundé, he moved to Lens in 1994, where he helped the club secure the 1998 French league title. His reputation as a consistently strong performer earned him moves to West Ham United in 1999, where he signed for a club-record £4.2 million, and later to Lyon in 2000, where he won both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Division 1 league title.

His final professional chapter saw him join Manchester City on loan in the 2002–03 season. During this period, he became a first-team regular under Kevin Keegan, starting 38 of 41 matches. He notably scored the final goal at the club's historic Maine Road stadium on April 21, 2003. However, his career was cut short during a 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia. While Cameroon led 1–0, Foé collapsed in the 72nd minute. Despite his manager's desire to substitute him due to apparent fatigue, Foé had signaled his intent to keep playing.

A second autopsy revealed that Foé died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hereditary condition that increases the risk of sudden death during intense physical exertion. The tragedy prompted unprecedented tributes; both the French and Cameroonian captains held his picture during the final, and all Cameroonian players wore his number 17 on their warm-up shirts. While Manchester City, Lens, and Lyon all retired his shirt numbers, Cameroon was unable to officially retire his number 17 due to FIFA regulations.
