The 41-year-old tight end who redefined longevity in the NFL
In short: Most athletes see their careers end in their thirties. Marcedes Lewis defied the biological clock to become the oldest player in Denver Broncos history, proving that elite technique and physical maintenance can extend a professional football career into a new era of longevity.
Marcedes Lewis, known by the nickname "Big Dog," established his pedigree early as a standout at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. By 2001, he was a nationally recognized prospect, eventually leading to a dominant collegiate career at UCLA. From 2002 to 2005, Lewis became a cornerstone of the Bruins' offense, ranking ninth on the school's all-time receiving list and setting the record for most receiving yards by a tight end with 1,571. The Jacksonville Jaguars chose him during the 2006 NFL draft's initial round, marking his entry into professional football. Over the next 12 seasons in Jacksonville, Lewis became a consistent producer, notably matching the franchise single-season touchdown record in 2010. His career was defined by reliability; he started all 16 games in four consecutive seasons between 2007 and 2010. He was a first-team All-Pacific-10 selection during his final college year. He also won the prestigious John Mackey Award. His rookie contract with Jacksonville was worth $7.5 million. He played alongside running back Maurice Jones-Drew.
Even as his role evolved, he maintained high-level production, including a career-high three receiving touchdowns in a single game in 2017. The most remarkable chapter of Lewis's career is his late-career endurance. After moving to the Green Bay Packers in 2018, he continued to contribute to playoff-caliber teams. He exceeded 5,000 total receiving yards in 2021, then reached 272 games by 2024 to set the tight end record. At 41 years old, he became the oldest tight end to compete in an NFL match in 2025, highlighting his careful bodily maintenance.
