From a goalkeeper scoring goals to becoming one of the world's best
In short: Most goalkeepers focus on preventing goals, but Mark Flekken once ventured into the opposing box to score one. Today, the Dutch international is recognized as a statistical powerhouse, known for a shot-stopping efficiency that has placed him among the elite in European football.
Born on 13 June 1993, Mark Flekken's journey from the Dutch border town of Bocholtz to the heights of the Bundesliga is marked by both remarkable highlights and significant setbacks. His early professional years saw him move from the Netherlands to the German youth academy of Alemannia Aachen, where he signed his first professional contract on 22 September 2011. While his career has included moments of unexpected glory—such as scoring a goal for MSV Duisburg in August 2016—it has also been defined by resilience following a complicated elbow injury that sidelined him for the entire 2020–21 season at SC Freiburg.
Flekken's rise to prominence is underpinned by extraordinary statistical performance. During his tenure with Brentford in the Premier League, he became a standout figure for his shot-stopping and distribution. In his debut season, he recorded 113 saves and seven clean sheets, even providing an assist for Neal Maupay against Manchester City. By the 2024–25 season, his impact was undeniable: he recorded 103 saves by April 2025, the highest number of any goalkeeper in Europe's top five leagues, and maintained a 72.5% save percentage. His prowess was further validated by the CIES Football Observatory Index, which rated him as the fifth best goalkeeper in the world.
His international career has progressed alongside his club success. After being called up for World Cup qualification matches in November 2021, he earned his senior debut for the Netherlands against Denmark on 26 March 2022. Following a period of sustained excellence, including winning the Premier League Save of the Month in February 2024, Flekken transitioned to Bayer Leverkusen on 3 June 2025 in a deal worth approximately €10 million. His trajectory continues to be a focal point for the Netherlands national team as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
