From a single scholarship offer to a decorated collegiate football career and professional pursuit
In short: Mark Gronowski entered college football with only one Division I scholarship offer, yet he transformed into a multi-time national champion and conference player of the year. His journey from South Dakota State to the professional ranks highlights the unpredictable trajectory of an athlete overcoming significant injuries and navigating roster cuts.
Born on October 5, 2001, in Naperville, Illinois, Mark Gronowski emerged from Neuqua Valley High School with limited recruitment interest. Despite having walk-on opportunities at major programs like Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Stanford, he chose South Dakota State, his sole Division I scholarship offer. This decision proved pivotal, as he quickly established himself as a standout talent, earning Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors during his freshman season in the spring of 2021.
Gronowski's collegiate path was defined by resilience. After a severe knee injury sidelined him during the 2021 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game—a narrow 23–21 loss to Sam Houston State—he utilized a medical redshirt to recover. He returned to lead the Jackrabbits to consecutive FCS national titles in 2022 and 2023, earning Most Valuable Player honors in both championship games. By his junior year, he secured the Walter Payton Award, cementing his status as one of the most productive quarterbacks in the division.
Following his success at South Dakota State, Gronowski entered the transfer portal in late 2024 and announced a move to Iowa in January 2025. His professional aspirations led him to the 2026 East–West Shrine Bowl, where he was named offensive MVP. However, the transition to the NFL proved challenging. After signing as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in May 2026, he experienced a series of roster moves, including being waived and re-signed, before a brief stint on the Houston Texans' practice squad in September 2026.
