The goalkeeper who rose from the shadow of a legend
In short: For years, Koen Casteels played second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois. But a sudden dispute and a shift in international dynamics transformed the Belgian keeper from a reliable squad member into a tournament protagonist and, eventually, a man who walked away from the national team entirely.
The professional trajectory of Koen Casteels is a study in persistence and the volatility of sporting hierarchies. Developed at K.R.C. Genk, Casteels was once considered the superior prospect to his teammate, Thibaut Courtois. However, a series of injuries to Genk's goalkeeping roster allowed Courtois to break into the first team, establishing a rivalry that would define Casteels' international career for over a decade.
Casteels' club career is defined by his long tenure in the Bundesliga, primarily with VfL Wolfsburg. After joining from TSG Hoffenheim in 2015, he became a cornerstone of the German side, notably winning the 2015 DFL-Supercup by saving a penalty from Xabi Alonso. His 2017–18 season was particularly dominant; he played every Bundesliga match and earned the Kicker Best Goalkeeper of the Bundesliga award.
While his club career flourished, his international journey was marked by both heartbreak and sudden opportunity. Though part of Belgium's third-place squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he missed the 2014 tournament due to injury. It was not until the friction between Courtois and coach Domenico Tedesco that Casteels finally ascended to the role of first choice. He performed brilliantly during UEFA Euro 2024, even recording an assist in a 2–0 victory over Romania.
The saga reached a definitive end in March 2025. Following a dispute regarding the decision to reintegrate Courtois into the Belgian squad, Casteels announced his retirement from international football. He now continues his career in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Qadsiah, where he secured the Golden Glove in his debut season after recording 14 clean sheets.
