In short: Martin Škrtel's career was defined by high-stakes intensity and remarkable longevity. After a £6.5 million move to Liverpool in 2008, the Slovak centre-back became a fixture in the Premier League, earning 104 international caps and helping his country reach major tournaments.

Born in Handlová on 15 December 1984, Škrtel rose through the ranks of Slovak football, playing for FK AS Trenčín before moving to Zenit Saint Petersburg. His success in Russia, where he won the Premier League in 2007, paved the way for a high-profile transfer to Liverpool in January 2008. Under manager Rafael Benítez, Škrtel became a versatile and aggressive presence, eventually earning the Liverpool Player of the Year award in May 2012.

His tenure at Anfield was marked by both defensive excellence and statistical anomalies. While he was part of a highly regarded defensive partnership with Daniel Agger, he also recorded a record fourth Premier League own goal during the 2013–14 season. Despite these setbacks, he remained a vital component of the squad, notably playing every minute of every Premier League match during the 2010–11 season and helping Liverpool secure a League Cup trophy in 2012.

On the international stage, Škrtel was a cornerstone of the Slovak national team. He earned 104 caps, making him the third most-capped player in his country's history at the time of his 2019 retirement. His international career included representing Slovakia at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016, where the team reached the Round of 16. After stints in Turkey and Italy, he returned to Slovakia in 2021 to play for Spartak Trnava, where he currently serves as sporting director.
