How a substitute's last kick secured a historic European triumph
In short: In 2005, Vladimír Šmicer was playing his final match for Liverpool. Facing a massive deficit in the Champions League final, he entered the fray as a substitute and changed history with a stunning volley and a decisive penalty.
For Vladimír Šmicer, the 2005 UEFA Champions League final was a high-stakes farewell. Having celebrated his 32nd birthday just the day before, the Czech midfielder knew his contract would not be renewed. He entered the pitch as a substitute for Harry Kewell after 22 minutes, finding himself in a match where Liverpool trailed Milan 3–0 at halftime.
The momentum shifted in the second half, and Šmicer played a pivotal role in the comeback. Just past the hour mark, he struck a 20-yard shot that flew past Dida into the corner, bringing Liverpool closer to the comeback. When the match reached penalties, Šmicer stepped up to score the decisive penalty, marking his last ever kick for the club.
His career was defined by both brilliance and physical struggle. While he achieved immense success, including winning the Ligue 1 title with Lens in 1997–98 and a treble with Liverpool in 2001, he was frequently plagued by injuries. A serious knee injury later in his career even caused him to consider retirement. Despite these setbacks, he remains a rare talent, being only the second player after Jürgen Klinsmann to score at three different European Championships (1996, 2000, and 2004).
Beyond club success, Šmicer was a mainstay for the Czech Republic, earning 80 caps and scoring 27 goals. His international career included crucial roles in the team's runs to the Euro 1996 final and the Euro 2004 semi-finals.
