The professional footballer who was once told he was too small to succeed
In short: At 17, Vladimír Coufal was released from the Baník Ostrava academy because scouts deemed him too small. From playing against 40-year-old amateurs for beer and sausages to winning European trophies, his journey is a masterclass in resilience and professional reinvention.
After his dismissal from Baník Ostrava, Coufal's career hit a period of profound obscurity. In 2009, he joined the amateur side ŠSK Bílovec, an experience he recalls as playing alongside much older men who competed for nothing more than food and drink after matches. This period of playing in the lower tiers of Czech football served as a bridge between his failed academy stint and his professional breakthrough.
His ascent through the ranks was steady. Following a debut in the 2. Liga for Hlučín in 2010, he moved through clubs like Opava and Slovan Liberec. By 2018, his performances earned him a high-profile move to Slavia Prague for 18 million Kč. Under manager Jindřich Trpišovský, he helped secure consecutive Czech First League titles in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons.
The pinnacle of his club career arrived in England. Joining West Ham United in October 2020 for £5.4 million, Coufal became a vital component of the Premier League side. Alongside Aaron Cresswell, he established an incredibly effective defensive bond, surpassing all other Premier League full-back pairs in assist numbers throughout 2020–21. This era culminated in winning the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023.
Despite his success, his career has not been without controversy. In November 2023, Coufal was among three players expelled from the Czech Republic training camp following allegations of clubbing just days before a crucial Euro 2024 qualifier. Nevertheless, he remains a fixture of the national team, having represented the Czech Republic in major tournaments including Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
