Crowned as king at age eleven, Mary of Hungary faced a lifetime of betrayal.
In short: Ascending the throne as a child monarch in 1382, Mary of Hungary navigated a volatile landscape of dynastic ambition and violent rebellion. Despite being crowned king, her authority was constantly challenged by nobles who rejected female rule, leading to a tragic sequence of imprisonment, political murder, and premature death.
Born in 1371 to the Hungarian and Polish monarch Louis the Great, Mary was thrust into the center of European power politics before her first birthday. Her father secured her future through a betrothal to Sigismund of Luxembourg, intending to cement his dynastic legacy. When Louis died in 1382, the eleven-year-old Mary was crowned king in Székesfehérvár to solidify her status, though the move failed to silence opposition from barons who favored Charles III of Naples.
The political climate grew increasingly lethal as factions vied for control. In 1385, Charles III successfully seized the crown, only to be assassinated months later at the behest of Mary’s mother, Elizabeth of Bosnia. The subsequent power vacuum triggered a brutal uprising. In 1386, the queens were ambushed at Gorjani; Elizabeth was strangled in front of her daughter, and Mary was held captive in various fortresses until her liberation by a Venetian-backed force in 1387.
Following her rescue, Mary was reunited with her husband, Sigismund, who had been crowned king in his own right. Although she remained his official co-ruler, her political influence dwindled significantly. Her life ended abruptly in 1395 at age twenty-three; while pregnant and hunting alone in a forest near Buda, she suffered a fatal fall from her horse. The accident claimed both her life and that of her premature son, effectively ending her tumultuous reign.
