The meteoric rise and complex career of football's youngest record-breaker
In short: From breaking records in France to winning European trophies in England, Mathys Tel has experienced a career of extreme highs and sudden setbacks. Discover how a teenage prodigy navigated massive transfers, club disputes, and the intense pressure of elite European football.
Born in Sarcelles in 2005, Mathys Tel emerged as a generational talent with a remarkable versatility. Early in his career at Rennes, he demonstrated the ability to play as a winger, attacking midfielder, or centre-forward, often compared to the style of Anthony Martial. His professional debut on 15 August 2021 was historic; at just 16 years and 110 days old, he became the youngest player to ever appear in an official match for Rennes, surpassing the previous record held by Eduardo Camavinga.
His ascent continued with a high-profile move to Bayern Munich on 26 July 2022 for a fee of approximately €28.5 million. In Germany, Tel proved his clinical nature, becoming the club's youngest-ever goalscorer in a competitive match at 17 years and 126 days old. However, his time in the Bundesliga was marked by both brilliance—such as a stoppage-time Champions League winner against Manchester United in September 2023—and difficulty, including limited playing time under coach Vincent Kompany.
The 2024–25 season brought a significant shift to the Premier League. Initially joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan in February 2025, Tel helped the club secure the UEFA Europa League, ending a 17-year trophy drought. By June 2025, his stay became permanent in a £30 million deal. Despite this success, his journey remains volatile; he has faced squad omissions from the Champions League and club-level restrictions that prevented him from representing France at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
