In short: Before he was a powerhouse in the ring, Matt Bloom was a schoolteacher for children with behavioral problems and the deaf. His path from the classroom to professional wrestling began with a single invitation from a legendary trainer to trade his textbooks for a training regimen.

Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, Matt Bloom’s early life was defined by academic and athletic versatility. During his time at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, he achieved athletic recognition in baseball, track, basketball, and football. He later attended the University of Pittsburgh as an offensive lineman, eventually graduating in 1996 with a degree in sign language. Following graduation, Bloom transitioned into a career as a schoolteacher, instructing students in mathematics and English at Revere High School.

The pivot to professional wrestling was sparked by a chance encounter. While rewarding his students with trips to wrestling events, Bloom—who had harbored childhood aspirations of wrestling—met the legendary trainer Killer Kowalski. After expressing his interest, Kowalski invited Bloom to join his school. Bloom made the significant decision to leave his teaching career to train under Kowalski and Dory Funk Jr., making his professional debut in Connecticut in 1997.

Bloom’s career was marked by diverse personas and international success. In the WWF, he portrayed characters ranging from the body artist Prince Albert to the comical 'Hip Hop Hippo' in the Zoo Crew, and finally the powerhouse A-Train. He also found success in Japan from 2005 to 2012 with AJPW, NJPW, and Noah as Giant Bernard. In Orlando, Florida, he currently instructs at the WWE Performance Center, sharing techniques acquired many years prior.

His journey highlights a unique trajectory of professional reinvention. He moved from local territories like the NWA and Power Pro Wrestling—where he won the inaugural PPW Heavyweight Championship—to the global stage of the WWF. His career is a testament to the transition from a structured educational environment to the high-octane, performative world of sports entertainment.
