Why WWE's 2026 Money in the Bank is breaking its own traditions
In short: For years, the Money in the Bank event has been a summer staple. But the 2026 edition in New Orleans is set to rewrite the rulebook, moving to an unprecedented October date and debuting a major new broadcasting partnership in the United States.
Since its inception in 2010, Money in the Bank has typically been held between May and July. However, the 17th annual event, scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Smoothie King Center, will be the latest in the series' history. This shift marks the first time the event will take place in October and the first time it will be held after SummerSlam, breaking the long-standing tradition of scheduling the event between WrestleMania and SummerSlam. The 2026 edition will feature competitors from both the Raw and SmackDown brands. This particular installment is also being promoted under the title Money in the Bank: New Orleans.
The scheduling changes were not without controversy or complexity. While WWE Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque initially confirmed an August 29 date, the event was pushed back twice. By June 2026, it was revealed the event would move to October. Industry reports offer differing perspectives on the cause: some suggest a conflict with broadcast partners, while others, like Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Figure Four Online, point to production logistics and touring conflicts in September. The venue shift occurred after New Orleans was originally slated to host WrestleMania 42 in April 2026. This change was part of a broader agreement involving the city hosting a future WrestleMania event.
The 2026 event also signals a massive shift in how fans will watch. Once the August 2025 Peacock deal ends, ESPN will broadcast this Money in the Bank within the US, while Netflix handles international viewers. The event remains one of WWE's 'Big Five' annual shows, centered around the high-stakes ladder match where winners secure a championship match of their choosing at any time within one year. In the United States, the event will be available via ESPN's direct-to-consumer streaming service. Meanwhile, viewers in Sub-Saharan Africa can access the broadcast through SuperSport.
