The defenseman who knelt to challenge racism in professional hockey
In short: In 2020, Matt Dumba did something few NHL players had ever done: he knelt during the national anthem. Beyond the ice, his career has been defined by both high-stakes defensive play and a vocal commitment to fighting intolerance within the sport.
Matt Dumba’s professional journey is marked by significant milestones, both on and off the ice. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on July 25, 1994, the Canadian defenceman rose through the junior ranks with the Red Deer Rebels before being selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2012 NHL entry draft. His decade-long tenure in Minnesota saw him evolve from a highly touted prospect into a key contributor, including a breakout 2015–16 season where he played 81 of 82 games and recorded career highs in points and penalty minutes.
However, Dumba's impact extended far beyond his statistical output. Following George Floyd's death in August 2020, he was the initial athlete to kneel for the U.S. national anthem. This symbolic act of protest was supported by Malcolm Subban and Darnell Nurse, who placed their hands on Dumba's shoulders as the players remained in position for both anthems. This moment highlighted Dumba's dedication to social change, leading to his role as a founding executive board member of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, an organization dedicated to addressing racism and intolerance in the sport.
His commitment to community and diversity was further recognized by the NHL, which named him the 2020 King Clancy Award winner. Dumba has consistently advocated for greater inclusivity within hockey during his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Arizona Coyotes. Whether through his play on the ice or his advocacy off it, he has consistently used his platform to address systemic issues within the professional hockey landscape.
