In short: Selected first overall in the 2004 MLB draft, Matt Bush was once considered a rare five-tool talent. Yet, his path to the major leagues was delayed by over a decade due to severe legal troubles, substance abuse, and multiple surgeries, turning a promising career into a cautionary tale of lost potential.

Matt Bush was drafted first overall by the San Diego Padres in 2004 as a shortstop, receiving a $3.15 million signing bonus. Despite his high school reputation as a standout athlete, his professional trajectory was immediately compromised. His career was marked by a series of off-field incidents, including bar fights and assault allegations, which led to his release from multiple organizations. By 2007, the Padres converted him to a pitcher, but his progress was repeatedly halted by injuries, including Tommy John surgery.

The most significant turning point occurred in 2012 when Bush, while intoxicated, struck a 72-year-old motorcyclist, Tony Tufano, in Florida. Tufano survived due to his helmet, but Bush was sentenced to 51 months in prison after pleading no contest to DUI with great bodily injury. Following his release in 2015, the Texas Rangers signed him to a minor league contract. He finally made his MLB debut in May 2016 at age 30, showing flashes of his original talent as a relief pitcher.

Despite his return to the majors, Bush continued to struggle with injuries and inconsistency, undergoing a second Tommy John surgery in 2019. His career saw him move between the Rangers and the Milwaukee Brewers, but his personal challenges persisted. In October 2024, he was arrested for DWI and evading arrest in Texas. Following a parole violation in early 2025, he was sentenced in February 2026 to 10 years in prison, with parole eligibility set for 2030.
