The seventh-round underdog who mastered the art of the backup
In short: In the high-stakes world of the NFL, most stars are drafted in the first round. But Matt Flynn proved that being a late-round selection doesn't preclude championship glory. From a Texas high school standout to a Super Bowl champion, his career is a masterclass in professional resilience.
Matt Flynn’s journey began as a highly-rated prospect at Robert E. Lee High School in Texas, where he was ranked as the state's top quarterback in 2003. After a collegiate career at LSU—highlighted by leading the Tigers to a BCS National Championship victory over Ohio State in January 2008—Flynn entered the professional ranks as a seventh-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Before reaching the collegiate level, he played under coach Mike Owens. His senior season was particularly impressive, as he managed to lead his high school team to a state semifinal despite suffering a broken foot during the final four games of the year.
While often overshadowed by more highly-touted players like Brian Brohm or Russell Wilson, Flynn carved out a significant niche as a reliable veteran. During his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, he was part of the roster that won Super Bowl XLV in February 2011. He also demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, setting single-game Packers records on January 1, 2012, with 480 passing yards and six touchdowns against the Detroit Lions. His impact was felt even when not starting, as he earned a championship ring during the Packers' victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also famously threw three touchdown passes during his first professional start against New England.
Flynn's career was characterized by his movement through various NFL rosters, including the Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints. His ability to step in during injury crises was vital; for instance, he led a massive second-half comeback against the Dallas Cowboys in December 2013. Despite the volatility of being a backup—facing releases and demotions—Flynn remained a respected presence in the league for years. His time in Oakland was brief, as he was released only six months after joining the team. Later, he joined the New England Patriots in June 2015 to provide veteran support for Jimmy Garoppolo.
