The intricate transfer web and rise of Italian winger Matteo Politano
In short: From the youth academies of Roma to the heights of the Champions League, Matteo Politano’s career is a masterclass in professional persistence. Discover how a talented Calabrian winger navigated complex multi-player deals, sudden tactical shifts, and high-stakes transfers to establish himself in the upper echelons of Serie A.
Born on 3 August 1993, Matteo Politano emerged from the A.S. Roma youth system, where he was a key contributor to several title wins, including the 2010 Allievi U17 league and the 2012 Coppa Italia Primavera. During the 2011–12 season, he stood as the sixth-highest scorer for Roma's youth squad, netting seven goals.
His path to stardom involved a labyrinth of financial negotiations and player exchanges. In June 2013, Pescara acquired him for €500,000 as part of a complex deal involving other players like Caprari and Piscitella. After stints at Perugia and Sassuolo, he eventually joined Inter Milan on loan in 2018. At Inter, he became an indispensable asset, appearing in 48 matches during the 2018–19 season—the most of any outfield player, surpassed only by goalkeeper Samir Handanović.
However, the arrival of manager Antonio Conte and a shift to a 3–5–2 formation threatened his standing at Inter. A high-profile January 2020 move back to Roma, intended as a player swap for Leonardo Spinazzola, famously collapsed due to concerns over Spinazzola's physical condition. This paved the way for his move to Napoli on 28 January 2020, where he continued to find success, including scoring a decisive goal against Real Sociedad in the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League.
On the international stage, Politano transitioned from Italy U19 appearances in 2012 to a senior debut against Saudi Arabia in May 2018. He quickly made his mark, scoring his first international goal in a 1–0 victory over the United States in November 2018.
