In short: At age six, Matthew Holness asked horror legend Peter Cushing for an autograph. The star was unsettled by how much the child already knew. This early fixation eventually birthed Garth Marenghi, a fictional horror author who would transform from a stage spoof into a television cult phenomenon.

Matthew Holness, born in Whitstable, Kent, in either 1974 or 1975, built a career defined by the intersection of horror and comedy. His creative journey began with a deep fascination for Hammer horror films, a passion that famously concerned the legendary Peter Cushing. After studying English at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Holness became a prominent member of the Cambridge Footlights, performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe during the mid-1990s alongside future comedy stars like John Oliver and Richard Ayoade.

Holness is most widely recognized for creating and portraying the absurd, spoof horror writer Garth Marenghi. The character first appeared in the stage show 'Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight,' which earned a Perrier Award nomination at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2000. The sequel, 'Garth Marenghi's Netherhead,' secured the Perrier Award the following year. By 2004, the character transitioned to television in 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace' on Channel 4. While the series eventually gained a dedicated cult following, it initially struggled with low broadcast ratings.

Beyond the Marenghi universe, Holness has demonstrated significant range as an actor and director. He appeared in 'The Office' in 2002 and later directed the psychological horror film 'Possum' in 2019, a project he noted was 'not remotely funny.' His literary output also extends into character-driven fiction; in 2022, he released 'Garth Marenghi's TerrorTome,' a collection written from the perspective of the fictional author. This was followed by 'Garth Marenghi’s Incarcerat' in 2023 and 'Garth Marenghi’s This Bursted Earth' in 2025.
