The ritualistic marksman who redefined the Essendon goal-kicking record
In short: Before taking a set shot, Matthew Lloyd would pull up his socks and throw grass into the air. This quirk, designed to lower his heart rate, became so iconic it was nicknamed the 'Lloyd Rule'. It was the signature of a man who would become Essendon's greatest-ever goal-kicker.
Matthew Lloyd's career at the Essendon Football Club was defined by clinical precision and remarkable longevity. A powerful full-forward known for his overhead marking and left-foot accuracy, he became the club's all-time leading goal-scorer with 926 goals from 270 games. His dominance was so absolute that he topped Essendon's goal-scoring list every year from 1997 until 2009, with the sole exception of 2006 when a severe hamstring injury limited him to just three appearances.
His technical mastery was matched by a highly recognizable pre-shot ritual. To maintain focus and manage his heart rate, Lloyd would step far back from the mark, pull up his socks, and toss grass into the air to judge the wind. This habit became so famous that when the AFL introduced a shot clock in 2006 to limit time taken for set shots, the new regulation was widely referred to as the 'Lloyd Rule'.
Lloyd's impact on the league was profound, earning three Coleman Medals as the league's leading goalkicker (2000, 2001, and 2003) and five All-Australian selections. His physical resilience was tested by significant injuries, including a ruptured spleen in 1996 and a career-threatening hamstring tendon snap in 2006. Despite these setbacks, he remained a cornerstone of the club, winning a premiership in 2000 and serving as captain from 2006 to 2009. Upon his retirement in 2009, his legacy was cemented by the renaming of the club's leading goalkicker award to the Matthew Lloyd Medal.
