The prolific goal-kicker who redefined the boundary line
In short: He was a dominant force for Richmond, known for unmatched marking prowess and speed. Yet, one violent injury in 1995 was so severe it forced stadium officials to physically move the fences at the Sydney Cricket Ground to protect players.
Matthew Richardson’s career was defined by a rare combination of a 197-centimetre frame and remarkable athleticism. As a key forward for Richmond throughout the mid-1990s and 2000s, he became one of the most prolific scorers in Australian rules history. He led the club's goalkicking for thirteen seasons and amassed 800 career goals, a tally that placed him twelfth on the all-time AFL/VFL list at the time of his retirement in 2009.
Despite his immense scoring output, Richardson holds a unique distinction: he holds the record for the most goals kicked without ever winning a Coleman Medal. His dominance was often marked by physical resilience. In 2007, playing in the Dreamtime at the 'G match, he competed with both a fractured eye socket and a broken nose. In 2008, he transitioned to playing on the wing, where he led the entire AFL in marks per game, averaging 11.1 per match.
His physical impact even altered the sport's infrastructure. During a 1995 match against Sydney, Richardson suffered a torn left ACL after hyper-extending his knee while running out of bounds and crashing into a fence. Following the injury, the Sydney Cricket Ground expanded the gap between the fence and the boundary, which previously measured only 2.5 metres in some spots. Beyond the field, Richardson transitioned into a prominent media personality, serving as an AFL expert commentator and a member of the AFL's All Australian selection committee.
A true fan favourite, Richardson's popularity was evident during the 2008 Brownlow Medal, where the crowd cheered every vote he received. His legacy is cemented through his induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2014 and his place in the Richmond Team of the Century.
