The controversial rebranding that transformed a basketball dynasty
In short: For over three decades, the Melbourne Tigers were the heartbeat of Victorian basketball. But in 2014, a sudden, controversial rebrand to Melbourne United changed everything, sparking outrage from legends and fans alike. Discover how a storied franchise navigated financial debt, legendary father-son duos, and a complete identity shift.
The franchise's roots trace back to 1931 with the Victorian Basketball Association, but its professional era truly ignited in 1984. For much of that era, the Melbourne Tigers were defined by the Gaze family; coach Lindsay Gaze and his son Andrew led the team through a period of immense highs and significant struggles. While Andrew Gaze set a staggering NBL record of 44.1 points per game in 1987, the team's early years were marred by a lack of financial resources, including a 3–23 record during those difficult early seasons.
The 1990s brought championship glory, fueled by legends like Lanard Copeland and Mark Bradtke. The team secured titles in 1993 and 1997, even setting an NBL record for aggregate attendance during a 1996 Grand Final series, which drew 43,605 fans. However, the path was never smooth. By 2002, the organization faced a $2 million debt, necessitating a move into private ownership under a consortium including businessman Seamus McPeake.
In May 2014, the franchise underwent a radical transformation, rebranding as Melbourne United. Owner Larry Kestelman intended the change to unite Victorian basketball supporters, but the move faced fierce opposition. Legends like Andrew Gaze and Lanard Copeland were so unsettled by the loss of the Tigers identity that Copeland famously expressed a desire to have his jersey removed from the rafters. Despite the friction, the new era has seen continued success, with United claiming NBL championships in 2018 and 2021, cementing their place as one of the league's most decorated franchises.
