From collegiate record-breaker to NFL veteran, the complex career trajectory of Michael Gallup
In short: Adopted as an infant and rising through community college to become a standout NFL wide receiver, Michael Gallup experienced a career defined by explosive early production and subsequent injury-related setbacks. His journey from the Dallas Cowboys to brief stints with the Raiders and Commanders reflects the volatile nature of professional football.
Born in 1996, Michael Gallup’s path to the NFL was unconventional. After high school, he enrolled at Butler Community College to improve his academic standing before transferring to Colorado State University. There, he flourished, setting a school record with 100 receptions in 2017 and becoming a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. His collegiate dominance earned him a third-round selection by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2018 NFL draft.
Gallup’s professional career began with promise. During his 2019 season, he teamed with Amari Cooper to help the Cowboys achieve a rare milestone: two 1,000-yard receivers in a single season. However, his momentum was repeatedly interrupted by significant physical trauma. A torn lateral meniscus in 2019 was followed by a season-ending torn left ACL in January 2022. Despite these challenges, the Cowboys signed him to a five-year, $62.5 million extension in March 2022, hoping he would regain his pre-injury form.
The recovery process proved difficult. Following his return, Gallup struggled to reclaim his role as a primary target, eventually falling behind teammates like CeeDee Lamb in the offensive hierarchy. After being released by Dallas in March 2024, Gallup’s career entered a period of rapid transition. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, retired briefly in July 2024, and attempted a comeback with the Washington Commanders in 2025 before being released in August. His story remains a poignant example of the physical and mental toll inherent in elite athletics, underscored by the personal tragedy of losing his brother, Andrew, to suicide in 2018.
