In short: Most professional athletes dream of the draft, but Michael Hoecht’s journey to the NFL's highest stage was defined by navigating roster cuts, position changes, and a sudden suspension. His story is a testament to the grit required to survive the volatile landscape of professional football.

Born in Oakville, Ontario, in 1997, Michael Hoecht’s early life was marked by frequent moves between Canada and Ohio. After a standout collegiate career playing four seasons for the Brown Bears, where he accumulated over 170 tackles and 16 sacks, Hoecht entered the professional ranks not through the draft, but as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in April 2020.

His tenure with the Rams was a masterclass in professional adaptation. After initially being waived during the 2020 roster cuts, he fought his way onto the practice squad and eventually the 53-man roster. During the 2021 season, he appeared in every regular-season game and contributed to the Rams' Super Bowl LVI victory. His versatility was further tested in 2022 when the coaching staff transitioned him from defensive tackle to outside linebacker, a move that saw him become a starter for the final seven games of the season.

Despite his success, Hoecht's career has faced significant hurdles. Following a productive 2023 season where he started every game, he signed a substantial three-year, $21 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in March 2025. However, his time with the Bills began under difficult circumstances, including a six-game suspension for violating the league's PED policy. While he returned to the field in Week 8, a torn Achilles tendon during a Week 9 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs ultimately placed him on season-ending injured reserve.
