In short: He entered the NFL as a highly touted first-round pick, yet his professional journey was defined by a relentless battle against injuries. From the Cincinnati Bengals to the Arizona Cardinals, explore the decade-long career of a cornerback who navigated the physical extremes of professional football.

D'Andre Lawan Kirkpatrick arrived in the NFL with immense expectations. A standout at Gadsden City High School, he earned five-star ratings from recruiting outlets like Rivals.com and Scout.com before committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2009. By the 2012 NFL Draft, experts projected him as a first-round talent, and he was eventually selected 17th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. During his time at Gadsden City, he amassed 193 tackles and 17 interceptions. His high school accolades included being named the ASWA 6A back of the year.

His professional tenure was marked by significant physical hurdles. During his rookie preparations, a fractured knee and subsequent tendinitis delayed his debut. Throughout his eight seasons in Cincinnati, Kirkpatrick faced various setbacks, including a concussion in 2012, a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve in 2018, and a knee hyper-extension in 2019. Despite these obstacles, he secured a massive five-year, $52.5 million contract extension in 2017. He initially signed a four-year deal worth $8.62 million with the Bengals. Even after his release from Cincinnati in 2020, he continued his career by joining the Arizona Cardinals.

Kirkpatrick's defensive impact was most visible during his peak years. In 2015, he recorded career highs of 70 combined tackles and 16 pass deflections. He also found success in the secondary of the Arizona Cardinals, where he intercepted former teammate Andy Dalton in 2020. Over a ten-season career spanning the Bengals, Cardinals, and a brief stint with the 49ers, Kirkpatrick proved his ability to compete at the highest level of the sport. His 2014 season featured a notable two-interception performance against Peyton Manning. He also achieved a 101-yard interception return during a 2017 game against the Jaguars.
