In short: In 2020, Jeff Okudah entered the NFL as the most coveted cornerback prospect in his class. Selected third overall by the Detroit Lions, his trajectory was set for stardom, yet his journey has been defined by a relentless battle against significant physical setbacks and injuries.

Born in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Nigerian parents, Jeff Okudah emerged as a premier defensive talent at Ohio State University. His collegiate career reached a peak in 2019, when he was named a unanimous All-American and a finalist for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award. During that standout junior season, he recorded 34 tackles, nine passes defensed, and three interceptions, prompting him to forgo his final year of college to enter the professional ranks. He first achieved a career interception against the Miami Redhawks. This performance helped solidify his reputation as a top-tier defensive back.

The transition to the NFL brought immense financial stakes and physical challenges. With the 2020 NFL draft's third selection, the Detroit Lions took Okudah, signing him to a fully guaranteed four-year deal worth $33.528 million, featuring a $21.944 million bonus. However, his rookie campaign was immediately hampered by a hamstring injury during training camp and a core muscle injury that required surgery in December 2020.

The physical toll continued into subsequent seasons. In 2021, a ruptured Achilles tendon during the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers forced him onto injured reserve. After a stint with the Lions that included being benched toward the end of 2022, Okudah moved through several franchises. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in April 2023, signed with the Houston Texans in March 2024, and joined the Minnesota Vikings in March 2025, where he faced further injury setbacks, including a concussion in late 2025. His time with the Lions concluded after he was benched during the 2022 season. He also missed the final game of that year against Green Bay.
