From undrafted free agent to Super Bowl LIV: the resilient rise of Raheem Mostert
In short: Raheem Mostert’s path to professional football was anything but linear. After going undrafted in 2015, he navigated a whirlwind of practice squads and roster cuts across eight different teams. Yet, this journey eventually led him to the Super Bowl and a Pro Bowl selection, proving that persistence pays off.
Mostert's professional career began with significant volatility. After being passed over in the 2015 NFL draft, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but was cut just days before the season began. He spent the following years moving between the practice squads and active rosters of the Eagles, Dolphins, Ravens, Browns, Jets, Bears, and 49ers.
His breakthrough came with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2019, Mostert delivered a historic postseason performance. During the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, he recorded 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns, setting a franchise postseason record. This performance helped propel the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, where Mostert contributed a touchdown in a 31–20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Beyond his rushing ability, Mostert's background as a standout track athlete at Purdue University and New Smyrna Beach High School provided a foundation of elite speed. While at Purdue, NFL.com rated him the quickest NCAA college football athlete, trailing only Tyreek Hill from Oklahoma State, who clocked 9.98s for 100m. Mostert's own versatility was evident during his collegiate years, where he excelled in sprinting, hurdling, and jumping.
By 2023, Mostert's career reached a new peak with the Miami Dolphins. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection after leading the league in rushing touchdowns, cementing his status as a premier NFL running back after years of navigating the league's most competitive rosters.
