The architect of the anime voices that defined a generation
In short: For many, the iconic voices of Dragon Ball and Attack on Titan are inseparable from the shows themselves. Yet, behind these performances was Mike McFarland, a visionary who didn't just translate dialogue—he meticulously reconstructed the soul of Japanese animation for Western ears.
Mike McFarland joined Funimation in 1997, beginning a career that would fundamentally shape how anime is consumed in the United States. Master Roshi and Yajirobe were first voiced by him in English for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. His influence extended far beyond his own vocal performances; he served as an ADR (automated dialogue replacement) director for some of the industry's biggest pillars, including Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, and the Rebuild of Evangelion films.
McFarland’s philosophy was rooted in preservation rather than adaptation. Unlike some dubbing styles that sought to overhaul a series' identity, McFarland aimed to maintain the specific tone and feel of the original Japanese versions. Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain served as his main sources of inspiration regarding English dubbing. To achieve this, he insisted on watching the original Japanese performances closely, attempting to match the dialogue's realism and emotional weight for every unique series he touched.
His work helped popularize titles like YuYu Hakusho and Case Closed in the West, earning him a reputation as a key driver of the medium's popularity. Tragically, his career was cut short by a sudden health crisis in early 2025. What began as a suspected ear infection was revealed to be a brain tumor requiring emergency surgery. He was eventually diagnosed with glioblastoma and passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 56, leaving behind a legacy that defined the sonic landscape of modern anime.
McFarland's contribution represents a bridge between cultures. By prioritizing the nuances of Japanese performance while ensuring accessibility for English speakers, he helped move anime from a niche interest to a mainstream cultural phenomenon.
