From unselected rookie to the NFL's youngest active head coach
In short: Before he was a prominent NFL strategist, Mike McCoy was a quarterback fighting for a roster spot. His journey from an undrafted free agent to leading the San Diego Chargers illustrates the volatile, high-stakes nature of professional football coaching.
Mike McCoy's path to the NFL sidelines was forged through a resilient playing career. After playing for Long Beach State in 1991, he transferred to the University of Utah when his original program was discontinued. At Utah, McCoy became a standout, recording 7,404 passing yards and 49 touchdowns. His collegiate career peaked in the 1994 Freedom Bowl, where a last-minute, five-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Dyson secured a 16–13 victory over Arizona and propelled the Utes to a top-ten national ranking.
Despite his collegiate success, McCoy went unselected in the 1995 NFL draft. He navigated the fringes of the league as a rookie free agent with the Denver Broncos and later joined the Green Bay Packers' practice squad in November 1995, providing depth during injuries to Brett Favre and Ty Detmer. His professional playing days also included stints with the Amsterdam Admirals, 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, and two years in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders.
Transitioning to coaching, McCoy built a reputation as an elite offensive mind. He spent nearly a decade with the Carolina Panthers, reaching Super Bowl XXXVIII, and later served as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator. In 2013, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the youngest active head coach in the NFL when he took over the San Diego Chargers. While his tenure in San Diego included a playoff victory over the Bengals, his time as a head coach was marked by the franchise's eventual relocation to Los Angeles. He remains the last person to coach an NFL team in San Diego.
McCoy's coaching career has been a series of high-level appointments and sudden departures. From coordinating offenses for the Broncos and Cardinals to serving as interim head coach for the Tennessee Titans, his career reflects the intense pressure of the profession, where a single losing streak can lead to dismissal.
