From high school phenom to NBA Most Improved Player
In short: Monta Ellis bypassed college to enter the NBA directly from high school. After a meteoric rise that saw him named the 2007 Most Improved Player, he became one of the league's most prolific scorers, twice averaging nearly 25 points per game during his professional career.
Born in 1985, Ellis arrived in the NBA as a high-profile prospect, having been drafted 40th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2005. His transition from Lanier High School in Mississippi to professional basketball was marked by immediate impact. During his senior year in 2004–05, he averaged 38.4 points and 7.9 rebounds, leading his team to a 35–2 record and a state championship. He earned recognition as a national player of the year alongside Greg Oden. His high school team also secured a runner-up finish in 2003.
His tenure with the Warriors was defined by rapid development. In the 2006–07 season, he achieved the largest scoring increase in the NBA, jumping 9.7 points from his rookie year to average 16.5 points. This ascent earned him the NBA Most Improved Player award. By the 2010–11 season, he was a central figure in a lethal duo alongside Stephen Curry, ranking eighth in the league in scoring with 24.1 points per game. He also helped the Warriors return to the playoffs following a twelve-year drought. During this time, he recorded a career-high thirteen assists.
Ellis's career was also marked by significant volatility and high-stakes contracts. In 2008, he signed a six-year, $66 million deal with Golden State, only to be suspended for 30 games after a motorized scooter accident resulted in a severe ankle injury. Despite such setbacks, he remained a consistent scoring threat for teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, and Indiana Pacers, proving his ability to lead offenses even as his role evolved over a decade of professional play. Following his time in Indiana, he was waived in 2017. He later transitioned into management as the general manager for Alcorn State.
