The short-lived life of the Amazon Prime drama Motorheads
In short: Premiering in May 2025, the coming-of-age drama Motorheads attempted to capture the high-octane spirit of Pennsylvania. Despite a solid critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes, the series faced a swift cancellation after just one season, leaving its future in the hands of other potential networks.
Created by John A. Norris, Motorheads centers on Logan Maddox, a former NASCAR driver turned auto body shop owner in Ironwood, Pennsylvania. The narrative follows Samantha, an ER nurse, and her teenage children, Zac and Caitlyn, as they navigate life in her hometown. The story weaves together themes of family and automotive passion, featuring characters like the local street racing champion Harris and a young mechanic named Curtis. The ensemble cast features Ryan Phillippe and Nathalie Kelley alongside Michael Cimino and Melissa Collazo. Supporting roles include Uriah Shelton and Nicolas Cantu, who was promoted to a main role during production.
The production of the series faced significant hurdles before it ever reached screens. While filming was originally intended to run from July to November 2023, the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike caused delays. Production finally commenced on March 25, 2024, in Toronto, Canada, with filming locations spanning various sites in Ontario, including Hamilton, Paris, and London. The crew included director Ruben Fleischer for the pilot, followed by Neil Burger. Additionally, the series' musical score was composed by Waz and Jamie Jackson.
Upon its release on May 20, 2025, the ten-episode series received a 78% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Metacritic offered a more tempered assessment, giving the show a score of 58 out of 100. Despite these mixed reviews, the series was canceled by Amazon Prime Video in August 2025, though it remains a candidate for acquisition by other networks. While Rotten Tomatoes was positive, Metacritic's score of 58 indicated mixed reviews. Following its August cancellation, the show is currently being shopped to different networks.
