The song that served as an act of defiance against fame
In short: In 1994, Radiohead faced a dilemma: satisfy their label's demand for another hit or protect their artistic integrity. They chose the latter, creating a track that used a medical metaphor to describe the suffocating nature of their own success.
Following the massive success of their 1992 debut single "Creep," Radiohead felt both sustained and constrained by its popularity. When EMI pressured them to record another commercial follow-up, the band responded with "My Iron Lung." The song's lyrics serve as a caustic metaphor for how "Creep" had become an emotional cage. Thom Yorke expressed his frustration directly in 1995, noting that people had defined their entire emotional range by that one track; he viewed "My Iron Lung" as a way to say "fuck you" to those who refused to listen further.
The production of the single was marked by technical experimentation and creative pivots. While most tracks were recorded at RAK Studios during sessions for their second album, *The Bends*, the band was dissatisfied with the studio results for the title track. They instead opted for an edited live performance from May 1994 at the London Astoria, which was captured in the back of a truck. This era also marked the first collaboration with producer Nigel Godrich and artist Stanley Donwood—a non-fan whom Yorke recruited because he disliked the band's previous cover art.
The release strategy was complex: EMI issued four different UK versions to encourage multiple purchases, while the US market saw only about 20,000 copies sold. Despite low initial sales and mixed reviews that compared its structure to Nirvana’s "Heart-Shaped Box," critics later praised the EP for its sophisticated songwriting. It is now viewed as a pivotal moment where the band began dismantling the alt-rock template, using tools like the DigiTech Whammy pedal and EBow to create glitchy, lo-fi textures that signaled their evolution into stadium-rock agitators.
