From Zimbabwean rugby roots to a record-breaking NFL linebacker
In short: Nate Landman’s journey to the NFL highlights a versatile athletic pedigree. Born in Zimbabwe while his father played rugby union, Landman transitioned from multi-sport high school stardom to becoming an elite defensive force capable of rewriting franchise records.
Landman's athletic foundation was built on versatility and international roots. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, he moved to Danville, California, where he became a standout multi-sport athlete at Monte Vista High School. He excelled in baseball, rugby union, and football, notably playing both wide receiver and linebacker. During his four varsity years, he amassed over 1,000 receiving yards while simultaneously recording over 160 tackles and 15 sacks, earning him East Bay Defensive Player of the Year honors.
His path to professional football was marked by significant scouting attention and a rapid rise in college. After committing to Colorado on July 20, 2016, he transitioned from a special teams role as a true freshman to an All-Pac-12 Conference selection in 2019. His collegiate career was defined by high-volume production, including a standout 2018 season where he recorded 104 total tackles and two interceptions, establishing himself as a premier inside linebacker.
Despite entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in May 2022, Landman quickly proved his durability and impact. After navigating the practice squad and making 14 starts in 2023, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in March 2025. He immediately made a signature impression by earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors in his first game for the team. By late 2025, his value was solidified with a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension.
Landman's legacy is already being cemented by historic performances. He holds the record for the most tackles in a single game in Rams franchise history, totaling 17. His career trajectory illustrates how diverse athletic backgrounds—from rugby to multi-position high school play—can forge elite defensive specialists at the highest level of American sports.
