The underdog who mastered the art of the defensive rebound
In short: Nathan Broad didn't have a smooth path to the top. After being overlooked in the 2011 draft, he spent years grinding in state leagues before becoming a three-time premiership hero. His journey is a masterclass in persistence, evolving from a developmental prospect into an elite defensive anchor.
Broad's professional trajectory was anything but linear. Despite being part of the Western Australian squad in 2011, he was not drafted and spent four years playing state league football in the WAFL. It wasn't until late 2015—after recording a repeat sprint time of 24.04 seconds (faster than any player at the national combine)—that Richmond selected him with the 67th overall pick. His early AFL career was defined by 'rebounder' roles and frequent stints in the reserves, including a significant period in the VFL during his first two seasons.
His breakthrough came in 2017. After battling an AC joint injury in April, Broad returned to the senior side in round 17 and became a vital component of Richmond's finals run. He notably kept opponent Tom Lynch goalless in the Grand Final, securing his first premiership medal in just his twelfth career game. However, this success was tempered by personal controversy; he was suspended for three matches in early 2018 for distributing an unauthorized photograph.
Broad eventually established himself as a statistical powerhouse. By round 22 of the 2019 season, he held the best winning percentage (80 percent) of any active AFL player with at least 50 games played. His 2021 campaign saw him reach new career highs in disposals (25) and marks (11) in a single match against the Western Bulldogs. Despite facing recurring injuries, including a significant syndesmosis ankle injury in 2021, Broad cemented his legacy as one of the league's most reliable defensive assets.
His career highlights include winning premierships in 2017, 2019, and 2020. He is recognized for his ability to adapt, moving from a general role to a specialized defensive position where he averaged 15.9 disposals and 7.3 intercepts per game during his peak form.
