From a refugee childhood in Zimbabwe to the NFL's second round
In short: Before he was a professional safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, Andrew Mukuba lived in a house with limited electricity in Harare. His journey from a displaced child to an elite athlete is a remarkable story of resilience and sudden, high-stakes success.
Andrew Mukuba’s path to the NFL was defined by profound transitions. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2002, Mukuba was part of a family that had fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo as refugees. His early years were marked by significant hardship; he lived in a home with minimal electricity, often sleeping on the floor alongside his siblings. In 2012, after being granted asylum, his family immigrated to Austin, Texas, when he was nine years old.
His athletic trajectory began in fifth grade, sparked by his P.E. teacher, Shannon Crenshaw. After demonstrating natural talent, Mukuba joined the Austin Steelers youth organization. He later became a standout at Lyndon B. Johnson High School, where he competed in track and field events, including the long jump and sprints from 100 to 400 meters. His performance earned him a four-star recruit rating, eventually leading him to commit to Clemson University over offers from LSU and Texas.
At Clemson, Mukuba made history as the first freshman defensive back to start a season opener since 1973. His rookie season earned him the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, backed by 47 tackles and seven passes broken up. Following a stint in the transfer portal, he moved to the Texas Longhorns in late 2023, where he earned All-SEC third team honors after a dominant senior season featuring 69 tackles and five interceptions.
The culmination of this journey arrived in the 2025 NFL draft, where the Philadelphia Eagles selected him with the 64th overall pick. Despite an ankle fracture that required surgery and placed him on injured reserve in late November 2025, Mukuba’s professional debut was impactful. In 11 appearances, he recorded 46 tackles and two interceptions, including a notable 41-yard interception return against the Kansas City Chiefs.
