In short: The Cosmos name once defined global football glamour, hosting superstars like Pelé. After two previous iterations collapsed or faced financial struggles, a new era begins in New Jersey. Now, the third iteration of this iconic club is fighting to reclaim its legacy in the third division.

The history of the Cosmos is a saga of three distinct eras. The original club, founded in 1970 by Atlantic Records and Warner Communications executives, became a global phenomenon in the North American Soccer League. By signing legends like Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer, they became the most glamorous team in world football, winning five league titles before folding in 1985. A second iteration attempted a revival between 2013 and 2020, winning three leagues but ultimately struggling with poor financial management and low attendance.

The current iteration emerged from a complex transition of ownership. In February 2025, the group 'North Jersey Pro Soccer,' led by Baye Adofo-Wilson, purchased a majority stake and the club's intellectual property. This new era saw the branding modernized in July 2025, dropping 'New York' from the crest while retaining the classic green, yellow, and blue colors. The club is now based in Paterson, New Jersey, playing at the historic Hinchliffe Stadium, a 7,500-capacity venue built in 1932.

The 2026 season marks a fresh start in USL League One. The club's leadership includes former Red Bull executive Erik Stover and former Italian international Giuseppe Rossi, who serves as vice chairman. While the club nominally identifies with New York, its strategic focus is on developing soccer talent within the North Jersey area, specifically around Paterson. This mission seeks to serve a massive population that, prior to the club's formation, had only one professional soccer team.

The club's heritage remains physically present through its retired numbers. Both the original No. 10, worn by Pelé, and the second iteration's No. 9, worn by Giorgio Chinaglia, remain retired by the current organization.
