The Tall Blacks: A basketball journey of overcoming great odds
In short: New Zealand's national basketball team, the Tall Blacks, is defined by a spirit of resilience. From their first game in 1962 to their historic 2002 World Championship run, they have navigated a path of heavy losses and underdog victories, often performing on the world stage with a unique cultural identity.
The Tall Blacks first took to the court on September 1, 1962, facing Singapore. Their early years were marked by establishing a presence in Asia, playing eight games that year against nations like Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. A pivotal moment in their regional identity occurred in 1971 with the first FIBA Oceania Championship, a zone created specifically so New Zealand and Australia could compete regularly for Olympic and World Championship spots. The team's trajectory has been a mix of intense rivalry and significant milestones. While Australia has often been a dominant hurdle, the Tall Blacks secured a landmark 89–78 win over them in 2001 to qualify for the 2002 FIBA World Championship.
In that tournament, under coach Tab Baldwin, the team achieved its best-ever finish of fourth place, pushing into the semi-finals after a series of notable victories over China, Venezuela, and Russia. Cultural integration is central to the team's identity. Before games, they perform a haka, specifically 'Tu Kaha O Pango Te Kahikatea.' Composed in 2006 by Don Hutana and Paora Winitana, the haka tells the story of overcoming adversity and draws from the myth of Tāne, who gained three baskets of knowledge. This blend of athletic pursuit and indigenous storytelling has become a hallmark of their international presence.
The team has also faced significant logistical and financial hurdles, such as a $50,000 loss during the 1983 Commonwealth Basketball Championships. Despite these challenges, they have secured three FIBA Oceania Championships and made two appearances at the Olympic Games, most recently in 2000 where they earned their first Olympic win against Angola.
