In short: Founded in 1908, the Newtown Jets are Australia's oldest existing rugby league club. Despite being expelled from the top-tier competition in 1983 due to financial pressures, the club survived, reinvented itself, and continues to compete today, proving that a storied sporting identity can endure long after the professional leagues move on.

Established on 14 January 1908 at the Newtown Town Hall, the Jets were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby Football League. Throughout their early decades, they secured three premiership titles—in 1910, 1933, and 1943. The 1943 victory remains particularly notable for drawing a record grand final crowd of 60,922 spectators. For most of their history, the club was affectionately known as the 'Bluebags,' only adopting the 'Jets' moniker in 1973 to reflect their location under the Sydney Airport flight path.

The club's trajectory shifted dramatically in the 1980s. Following a period of financial instability and pressure from rival clubs, Newtown was forced out of the top-flight competition at the end of the 1983 season. A desperate attempt to relocate to Campbelltown and rebrand as the 'Newtown-Campbelltown Jets' failed when the economic recession prevented the sale of their clubhouse. By the time the clubhouse was eventually sold in 1988, the window for readmission to the top tier had closed, leaving the club to navigate a new path in lower-tier competitions.

Remarkably, the Jets did not disappear. They re-emerged in 1990 to compete in the Metropolitan Cup, eventually finding a stable role as a feeder club for NRL teams like the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Their competitive spirit remains intact, highlighted by a dramatic 2019 Canterbury Cup premiership win secured in the 88th minute of extra time. From producing notable juniors like future Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to maintaining their home ground at Henson Park, the Jets remain a resilient fixture in Australian rugby league history.
