The Italian-born Polish star who rose through the ranks of Roma
In short: From a high-stakes Europa League debut to a multi-million euro transfer, Nicola Zalewski's career has been defined by rapid movement and decisive moments. Discover how a talent scout's discovery led to a prominent role in the upper echelons of Serie A.
Born in Tivoli on 23 January 2002, Nicola Zalewski's professional trajectory began with a dramatic introduction. His first professional appearance for Roma occurred on 6 May 2021, when he came on during a Manchester United Europa League semi-final. His impact was immediate; just seven minutes after his substitution, an error by Alex Telles resulted in an assist for Zalewski to help secure the win.
His rise through the Italian league has been marked by significant club transitions. After establishing himself at Roma—where he extended his contract until 2025—he moved to Inter Milan on loan in February 2025 for an initial fee of €600,000. Inter later exercised a €6.5m buy option in June 2025. By August 2025, Zalewski moved to Atalanta in a reported €17 million transfer.
On the international stage, Zalewski represents Poland, a path initiated after being scouted by Zbigniew Boniek. He made his senior debut for Poland on 5 September 2021, contributing an assist in a 7–1 victory over San Marino. His international career has seen notable moments, including a 90th-minute goal against Turkey in June 2024 and a decisive last-gasp penalty against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League in September 2024.
Despite his Italian upbringing and career, Zalewski maintains his Polish identity through his parents and continues to play for the Polish national team, utilizing his EU citizenship to live and work in Italy without needing local naturalization.
