How a seventh-round underdog caught the NFL's most improbable Hail Mary
In short: Noah Brown was never a high-profile prospect. Despite being projected as a mid-to-late round pick, the former Ohio State standout has carved out a resilient NFL career, culminating in a dramatic, game-winning play that captured the league's attention in 2024.
For many NFL players, the path to stardom is linear, but Noah Brown’s journey has been defined by resilience and unexpected turns. After a standout collegiate career at Ohio State University—where he recorded over 3,000 all-purpose yards and 42 touchdowns—Brown entered the 2017 NFL draft as a relatively low-projection prospect. Although NFLDraftScout.com rated him as the 27th top wide receiver, the Dallas Cowboys took him in the seventh round with the 239th pick.
His professional tenure has been marked by significant physical hurdles. From hamstring and knee surgeries to a kidney injury and broken ribs, Brown has frequently navigated the injured reserve list. Yet, his ability to adapt has kept him in the league. He has transitioned from a specialized blocking and special teams player to a more involved receiver, even slimming his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame to increase his agility in the passing game.
The most defining moment of his career arrived in 2024 while playing for the Washington Commanders. During a Week 8 contest versus the Chicago Bears, Brown secured a 52-yard Hail Mary from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels at the buzzer. The play, dubbed the 'Hail Maryland,' secured a victory and was eventually recognized as the NFL Moment of the Year. This moment served as a testament to the persistence required to survive the professional ranks as a late-round selection.
