However, he returned to wide receiver for his senior year, earning first-team All-State honors after recording 30 catches and eight touchdowns.
Gray’s collegiate career at Duke University was marked by both athletic growth and personal challenges. During his freshman year, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18. Even with such obstacles, he played every single match during his first year and later emerged as a premier tight end candidate for the 2021 NFL draft. His junior season earned him second-team All-American honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
The Kansas City Chiefs chose Gray at 162nd overall in the fifth round of 2021, where he rapidly joined a winning environment. He became a cornerstone of the team's success, winning back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 2023 and 2024 against the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. In September 2024, his value was solidified with a three-year, $19.5 million contract extension, marking his transition from a late-round draft pick to an established league veteran.
