The reluctant hero whose flaws make him a global icon
In short: Nobita Nobi is far from your typical hero. A lazy, procrastinating underachiever who struggles with basic concepts like eclipses, he is often seen napping or begging for help. Yet, this flawed elementary student has become one of the most recognizable figures in manga history.
Created by Fujiko Fujio, Nobita is the central figure of the Doraemon franchise. His life is defined by a desperate struggle to improve his circumstances, a struggle that eventually necessitates time travel. In the series' central premise, Nobita's future descendants—including his great-great-grandson Sewashi Nobi in the 22nd century—live in poverty due to Nobita's poor personal and business choices. To prevent this misery, Sewashi sends the robotic cat Doraemon back in time to assist him.
Nobita's characterization is intentionally grounded and relatable, a departure from protagonists who are typically portrayed as extraordinary. He is depicted with various questionable traits: a lack of physical ability, a tendency toward procrastination, and a reluctance to engage in critical thinking. He is frequently bullied by classmates Gian and Suneo and envies the straight-A student Hidetoshi Dekisugi. However, he also possesses redeeming qualities, such as courage, kindness, and a surprising mastery of marksmanship with light guns and the Air Cannon.
This relatability is a double-edged sword. While many viewers find him down-to-earth, he has faced significant criticism. In India and Pakistan, some view him as a harmful role model due to his lack of personal growth and undesirable traits like refusing to do homework. In 2016, a member of Pakistan's Tehreek-i-Insaf party even called for a ban on the series, citing its negative impact on children. Despite these controversies, Nobita remains a massive cultural force, even inspiring the naming of a dinosaur footprint fossil, Eubrontes nobitai, discovered in China in 2020.
