From Swiss academy prodigy to a £18 million Premier League move
In short: Noah Okafor’s career has been a whirlwind of high-stakes transfers and historic goals. From securing Austria's first Champions League knockout berth to a dramatic departure from the Swiss national team, the forward's journey through Europe's top leagues is a masterclass in rapid ascent.
Born in Binningen to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother, Okafor’s professional ascent began in the Basel academy. After signing his first professional contract on 31 January 2018 under Raphaël Wicky, he quickly made an impact, scoring his first goal for the club in July 2018. His early years were marked by silverware, including a Swiss Cup victory in the 2018–19 season under Marcel Koller.
His move to Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020 set the stage for historic European moments. In December 2021, he scored the decisive goal against Sevilla, helping Salzburg become the first Austrian club to reach the Champions League knockout stages. He followed this with a spectacular 'gurkerl' trick shot against AC Milan in September 2022, a moment that cemented his reputation as a clinical finisher.
The Italian Serie A provided both triumph and transition. After joining AC Milan in July 2023, he secured a Scudetto with Napoli on loan in May 2025, despite limited playing time under Antonio Conte. However, his international career took a sudden turn; after representing Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he announced his indefinite retirement from international football in September 2026, citing a breakdown in trust with manager Murat Yakin.
Okafor’s latest chapter saw a £18,000,000 move to Leeds United in August 2025. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League, notably scoring a brace against Manchester United in April 2026, marking Leeds' first away league win against their rivals since 1981.
